How to approach your landlord and get the things done?

Establishing and maintaining a positive relationship with your landlord will give you more comfort and east in the long run. However it is not an easy road, how does this work and what are the aspects you have to consider? To help you out, we have some tips and guidance in this process.

There are three tips we recommend when dealing with a landlord.

1. What you give is what you get

A lot of things starts with yourself, what goes around comes around, they say. So the first tip one is a good and pleasant tenant, to maintain this long term relationship between you and your landlord. Be the that polite and pleasant tenant for your landlord to work with, in this way you set an example of how you would like to be treated. This can go a long way to help you to increase comfort in your lifestyle and create a healthy relationship with your landlord.

2. Inform, request or complain?

Approaching your landlord about something that bothers you can be difficult for at times. But first, you have to know the difference between an informing, complaining and a request email to be taking care of. Knowing the difference between these three concepts will get your results faster, the first blow is half the battle. Before you start to request or complain, inform you landlord about the issue that needs to be taking care of. Provide them with enough information about what bothers you, for example take pictures of even a video to give them a clear and specific image what you are talking about. People are more likely to help if you are being polite and respectful e.g. your bed-frame is wobbly, the screws are missing and it decrease comfort while sleeping and you want to bring up this matter to your landlord, you can set up an email with photos of the bed and inform “My bed needs repair or replacement, could you please come and take a look, so that we can discuss the possibilities of this matter please?” You get the idea; a reasonable, respectful request will go a lot farther than a complaint every time.

3. Patience

Every landlord are different, and they prefer different communicating channels to be contacted. Make sure you know how to approach them. Please don’t assume that texting or calling is preferred or the most effective option, because this can not be the case. By following the landlord’s preferred process, will makes it easier for them to work with you. Landlords are also likely to respond more quickly to those who operate in the preferred process. Also, understand that contacting your landlord for any inquiries or questions of repairing issues can take time. Give it at least 48 hours to get back to you, if that is not the case send a friendly reminder to check if your message has been noticed.

Above all else, it's important to remember that you are ultimately dealing with another human being.

Try to understand their point of view, stay polite, respectful and have patience. Making a reasonable request and using the proper communication channels will help you to have a healthy and positive relationship with your landlord and create a pleasant stay in your new home.
