Parents coming to visit, what now?


As much as we love living abroad, when you parents come visit, it is always a challenge to impress them. However you have friends over often, you know places where to eat and what to do, it is not the same and a whole other experience when your parents are coming over. To guide you a little, we have list some spots that should offer inspiration for good times!


Tate Modern


The first one is one of UK’s best galleries and has been popular from day one with more than 5 million visitors a year. Ranging from 1500 to the present day, the gallery is home to some of the finest British art, whether your parents are into their art or not, they will enjoy visiting this gallery and guaranteed be impressed. If you need a bit of a pick-me-up, stop by the Tate Café overlooking the riverside.


British Museum


Another museum is arguably the best museum in the world is British Museum, with a collection of around 8 million objects preserving human history, art and culture, so if you or your parents are interested in the history of humankind this is the place to be. Only around 1% of the museum’s collection is on display for the public, the museum is the largest in the world covering over 92,000 square metres.


Borough Market


For lunchtime graze, bring your parents to this London’s oldest fresh food market and get a real feel for the best British and International produce in a colourful market with over 100 stalls. There are loads choices of food, veggie options, Paella, Thai street food, lots of curries, delicious free samples, friendly traders and quality food. It is not just the food that is appealing, but also think about the atmosphere too. This market is a busy place, but it is a happy busy, bustling market sort of busy. If you were looking for somewhere that will engage all five senses at one time of Mum and Dad, this place would be it.


Buckingham Palace


One of the most iconic of all London sites, Buckingham Palace, the official residence of Queen Elizabeth. This is another classic stop you have got to take your parents to. Every morning at 11:30 am you can catch the changing of the guard in front of the palace, arrive 15 minutes early and you should be able to get a spot with decent view.


Trafalgar Square

A must see destination for any visitors to London; it is a public square in the City of Westminster, formerly home to lots of pigeons and today a often used for public events. The square is famous for lots of monuments; it also features two glorious water fountains and four lions at the base of Nelson’s Column. Legend has it that the lions will come to life if Big Ben chimes 13 times.


South Bank


The South Bank on the river Thames, heart of London’s theatre, film, attraction and entertainment scene. Add to that book markets, food markets, festivals, art galleries, rooftop bars, anything a parent could want.


Hyde Park


If your parents feeling slightly overwhelmed by London’s museums, iconic landmarks or the overall rush of the city then head to London’s main green lung, Hyde Park, the largest of the four Royal Parks in central London. Where you can spend more leisurely exploring and taking in the greenery, not only does the park contains countless walking and biking paths framed by magnificent old trees, but also the giant Serpentine, a lake home to swans and other water fowls. If your parents need more action you can also rent a bike and spend the day pedalling and making stops wherever you choose. Or visit the Kensington Palace and learn more about the former and present home of the Royals.


Whatever you do and wherever you take your parents to, do not forget to cherish the moment, enjoy their company and the bonding time. Spending time in different city as a family is a priceless and a lifetime meaningful memory.
