According to house-sharing websites 9 out of 10 rooms advertised in London had no living room or communal area (2019), yet flat-sharing is one of the most popular living choices in the UK. It is a lifestyle choice where you are able to safe money on rent, and get all the social benefits of sharing the property with other people. Here are a few tips from us on how you can live in a property that has no living room.


  1. Accept that you have to use your bedroom as entertaining room for your friends. Try to arrange a suitable situation with your furnitures in order to allow your guest to be comfortable.

  2. Use small furnitures and try optimise the space. Often the size of the room is minimal, but it is crazy what you fit in such area if you are clever enough!

  3. Make you room personal. Give it some personal touch with pictures and interiors reflecting you as a person. Doesn’t have to be something that needs to be nailed agains the wall, and if that is the case; check with your landlord!

  4. Accept how much you are using your bedroom. City-life tend to be stressful, and you are not often finding yourself at home in the long run. Note that this is your room as well, you do not need to have friends over if you don’t want to! why not meet somewhere else for a coffee or a drink?

  5. Living room shouldn’t be a must when you are looking at a property. The reasons above should help you rethink the necessity for a living room when you are hunting for the ultimate flat-share. The people you share it with are also in the same situation as yourself and by communicating you might be able to find cool solutions in your bedrooms. Be creative!
