Leaving Your Flatshare This Christmas?

I’m sure I’m not the only one buzzing to go home for Christmas holidays. I’m really looking forward of having a short break from work and get ready for the new year coming up. However, before you jet off it is important to think how to leave you flat over the period that you are gone. Here is a quick checklist before you leave your flat empty over the Christmas period:

1. Do a deep clean where necessary. At least cover fridge and kitchen shelves. Bin or freeze food that will expire during the period you are gone so that you don’t come back to a smelly flat. Also remember to take the bin out.

2. Electricity. Keep the electricity supply on, however make sure all lights are off, and unplug everything that you can, except fridge and freezer.

3. Bring valuables back home. Take your laptop, tablets, and purses back home so that no one else but you have access to this.

4. Make sure all windows are closed and remember to lock the door properly. Burglaries often happen when people are out of the house and during special occasions such as Christmas – we do not want them.

5. Inform your landlord. Drop your landlord an email or text to inform about the period that you are gone. This is for both security and maintenance purposes.

6. Communicate if any issues. If you and your flatmate are leaving on different dates, talk with each other and make sure everything is sorted for when you both get back.

Make sure you tick these boxes before you go home and make your flat “winter proofed”.
